San Diego History

Naval Base Coronado. San Diego has a long and storied military history. The Naval Amphibious Base (NAB), Coronado was established in 1943 after the land was literally created from the dredging of San Diego Bay done to allow large ships used in World War II to steam into Naval Station San Diego. Cabrillo National Monument and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Climbing out of his boat and onto shore in 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo stepped into history as the first European to set foot on what is now the West Coast of the United States. His famous quote, “we came all the way from Spain for this?” is engraved in stone near his landing place at Ballast Point. In addition to telling the story of 16th century exploration, the park is home to a wealth of cultural and natural resources, including the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, first lit in 1855, and which stood watch over the entrance to San Diego Bay for 36 years.
